Q:What is a sunbed session?

A:A sunbed session is the length of time it takes to reach an individual’s MED (minimal erythemal dose). This is the point prior to over-exposure and burning, which must always be avoided. A session will therefore depend on the type of sunbed being used, the skin type of the person using it and the development point of their tan. Never sunbathe outdoors on the same day you take a sunbed session.

Q:How many times a week can I sensibly use a sunbed?

A:People with skin type 1; children under 18 and people on certain medications that may cause photosensitivity; people with a history of skin cancer in their family should not use a sunbed at all. Moderate tanning of 2-3 sessions a week is OK for everyone else but ensure you rest the skin for a minimum of 24 hours between each session and at least 48 hours for skin type 2. The European Standard advises not to exceed 60 sessions per annum.

Q:What are the benefits of using a sunbed?

A:Sunbeds offer a controlled way to tan and can provide appropriate levels of UV to ensure sufficient levels of Vitamin D are achieved and maintained. Tanning in sunlight means the body can be subjected to different levels of UV rays, depending on the time of day, location in the world, month of the year and so on. With a sunbed, a tanning programme can be developed to ensure skin type and the type of sunbed being used, are taken into consideration to ensure that over exposure, including the possibility of burning, is avoided.

Q:How long does a sunbed tan take to develop?

A:This is something that varies from person to person and it depends on various factors such as the skin type, the frequency of the sessions and the type of tanning equipment or the power of the lamps that each salon or tanning studio uses. Usually you will be able to see results after 3-5 sessions but you can gain a good base tan after 6-10 sessions.

Q:What is the age limit for sunbed use?

A:The minimum age to tan in the UK is 18 and no one under the age of 18 is allowed to enter any tanning room or use any UV tanning equipment. A salon is fully in its rights to ask for ID if someone looks young and under the age of 18.

Q:How much time should each tanning session last?

A:If this is your first time in a sunbed, there is no need to rush, since health and safety come first. It is suggested to have 1-3 minute sessions up to three times per week based on your skin type. This will eliminate the chances of your skin to get burnt and will help you to build your tan gradually. If you have already built up a base tan or you have a darker skin type you can have 6 minute sessions, two or three times per week. In any case, the amount of time spent within a sunbed should vary according to each person’s skin type and should comply with the safety guidelines of tanning.
